The Shop

Twenty-two feet of bench, two planers, a table saw, and a panel router on Varna Avenue. One crew. One kind of work.

Woodworks is Jack's shop. Kitchens, closets, wine walls, built-ins — residential only, Los Angeles only, one commission at a time. The drawings, the milling, the finishing, and the install are all done by the same small crew, on the same bench, with the same set of hands.

Every job starts with a tape in your room. Jack drives over, measures the walls, asks about the coffee mugs and the knife drawer. Two weeks later the elevations arrive. Six to twelve weeks after that, the van pulls up with the doors.

The work leaves the shop finished. Face frames, drawer boxes, edge banding, hinges — sprayed and set before it ever touches the site. That's why the installs are clean. That's why the last nail goes in on schedule.

La Maida

A 1920s Spanish Colonial in North Hollywood. One commission across three rooms. Eighteen-foot kitchen run, hidden pantry, stepped wine wall.

The kitchen was the whole program. An eighteen-foot run of rift-sawn white oak along the load-bearing wall, a full pantry behind a pair of pocket doors, and a wine wall stepping back into what used to be a hall closet. The 1924 plaster ceiling stayed. Everything below it was redrawn.

Appliances went integrated. The hood came in on a custom cabinet that carried the ceiling line. The back pantry picked up a salvaged brass sink from the owner's last house — re-plumbed, re-patinated, dropped into a counter that looked like it had been there since the building.

The wine wall is the piece that travels most in photos. Backlit oak rack, insulated door, tasting counter in quarter-sawn that matches the living-room built-ins on the other side of the wall. From the couch to the cellar, the eye never catches a seam.
